When I started coaching executives on LinkedIn, some of my well-meaning friends and colleagues were confused.

They knew me as a former university professor and magazine publisher. LinkedIn branding coach? That took some explaining.

My work had changed, but their understanding of me hadn’t caught up.

Perhaps you know the feeling.

You lead bigger teams now. You have moved into a completely new industry, built new expertise, or decided you want your next decade to look very different from the last.

But your LinkedIn profile and professional network still resemble the person you were 3-5 years ago.

And when someone asks what you do, you give an answer that is technically accurate… but says very little about where you’re going.

You’ve changed. But does anyone know that?

If you are new to the concept of personal branding, you may incorrectly assume rebranding is just about uploading a fresh LinkedIn profile photo or finding some clever new headline.

Sadly, that would be leaving a lot of money on the table.

Branding is a high-level strategy, executed consistently and patiently over months and years, that gradually helps the right people understand your unique value and exactly what you bring to the table.

If you have no experience in branding, it might take you two or three times as long as it would with a clear battle plan and a coach guiding you.

Shall we run a simple test to see if your online persona aligns with who you are today?

1. Baby steps... let’s run a simple 30-second test.

Ask someone who doesn’t know you well to look at your LinkedIn profile for 30 seconds. Then ask:

  • What do I do?
  • Who do I help?
  • Why should anyone care?

Don’t explain the answers first! Their confusion is useful information.

2. Next, write the sentence you want people to say about you.

To analytical thinkers like me: please don’t default to your job title. I am looking for the sentence someone uses when recommending you.

For example: “Juliana seems to have this unique gift of turning boring industry experts into superheroes on LinkedIn.”

That tells me much more than a list of qualifications. It creates a curiosity gap that makes people want to know more about you.

What would your sentence be? I know what mine is! :)

3. Connect your past to your future.

Most people who change careers assume they should throw away everything they’ve built to start afresh in a new industry.

I completely disagree, and that’s also why I keep getting stronger with every career transition and rebrand.

In contrast, I have observed folks who seem to get weaker with every career transition, as they lose the social proof, networks and mentoring relationships they had built over decades.

My scientific training didn’t disappear when I became a media entrepreneur and executive branding coach. I still bring rigor, curiosity and the ability to interpret complex data with me.

Your past experience isn’t something to hide because you’re evolving and growing.

My question is, does your past career turn into a liability for you, or will you unleash a growing fireball that expands your lifetime earning potential? 🔥

So where do you begin?

These three simple tests will help you audit where you are right now.
