Our fear of being seen has a price tag

Hello newsletter readers,

I regularly meet some of the smartest people in the world. Like Nobel Prize-level smart.

And some of them have less than 500 LinkedIn followers. Outside their narrow industry circles, nobody knows they exist. Their brilliance is a beautifully kept secret.

Which makes me wonder: have you ever tried to put a price tag on invisibility?

Most of us never do, because the cost never shows up on a bank statement. There is no invoice for the keynote invitation that went to a louder peer, the consulting gig that landed in someone else's inbox, or the board seat filled by someone with half the expertise and twice the visibility.

But it is real, and for senior professionals, it compounds year after year.

I know this fear personally

Before I became a LinkedIn branding coach, I was an academic scientist at a medical school. In academia, going dark is practically a virtue. You publish in journals nobody outside your field reads, you let your institution's name do the talking, and you consider self-promotion vaguely distasteful.

When I wrote my first LinkedIn posts, I felt physically uncomfortable after I pressed "publish." Who was I to share my opinions in public? What would my former colleagues think? What if someone smarter corrected me in the comments?

In other words, I had to climb cringe mountain like everyone else. There is no cable car to the top. You climb it one awkward post at a time.

As a LinkedIn coach to industry experts and senior executives, I learnt that the fear of being seen is a business liability. It wears three respectable disguises.

Block #1: "My work should speak for itself."

This is the most dangerous one because it sounds principled. But your work cannot speak. It literally has no mouth or LinkedIn account. It does not attend conferences or take meetings.

Decision makers cannot hire expertise they have never encountered. If your best thinking lives inside your company's walls, you have outsourced your reputation to your employer's brand. The day you leave (or are asked to leave), your visibility whittles to zero.

Block #2: "I'll post when I'm ready."

Spoiler alert: You'll never be fully ready. Perfectionism is fear in a business suit.

Your LinkedIn posts will cringe first before it is good. Nobody's first ten posts are their best ten posts. Cringe is not a sign that you should stop; it is a tax you pay on the way up.

Meanwhile, someone with 60% of your insight and 100% more courage is publishing weekly and becoming the name your prospects think of first in your niche.

Block #3: "What will my colleagues think?"

From one analytical thinker to another, the colleagues you fear judgment from are not your buyers. They will never hire you, refer you or pay your consulting fee.

You are optimizing your silence for an audience that was never going to support you, while starving the audience that would in a heartbeat.

Feed your trust funnel with signature content

In my 12-month VIP Brand Builder Mastermind community, I teach a simple concept called the trust funnel: know, like, trust, buy.

Every career opportunity or client relationship travels through those four stages, in that order. Now notice where hiding hurts you: at the very top.

If people do not know you, nothing downstream can happen. They cannot like a person they have never encountered. They cannot trust expertise they have never seen demonstrated. And they certainly cannot buy from you or hire you.

The fix is not to become an influencer, dance on TikTok, or post three times a day. I have always said: live more, post less.

The fix is to build signature content that attracts your desired audiences to you: a small, consistent body of work that lets the right people know you exist, like how you think, and trust that you can solve their problem.

Strategic visibility is the entry fee to every opportunity you say you want.

Ready to stop hiding for good?
